Jace's Machinations
CommentsStandard 57 Eng.C+Usr.—
Slightly slower than Consult the Star Charts (58), but an end-step cast can draw immediately and leave a Jace token for another card; a plausible control engine.
Could be wrong if Fast decks or efficient planeswalker answers may make the delayed second card too unreliable; unrevealed Jace support could also improve it.
Pioneer 38 Eng.DUsr.—
It is a slower, more conditional value play than Accumulate Wisdom (35): casting at end step can yield two cards, but it has no immediate board control.
Could be wrong if Existing or newly printed Jace planeswalkers could make the instant-speed loyalty clause materially stronger than the token mode alone.
Modern 29 Eng.FUsr.—
Far less immediate and efficient than Faithful Mending (50); a three-mana delayed draw engine without interaction is unlikely to meet Modern's tempo demands.
Could be wrong if A resilient blue control shell able to protect the token could make the guaranteed end-step card plus follow-up draw worth testing.
Legacy 23 Eng.FUsr.—
Much slower and less resilient than Stock Up (56) or Legacy's efficient engines. It may be tested in control, but three mana for delayed value is a major liability.
Could be wrong if A Jace with unusually strong minus abilities could turn the instant-speed activation text into a unique control tool.
Commander 48 Eng.C-Usr.—
An end-step cast can draw a card immediately, then generate another card or selection later; it is a solid but replaceable engine in Jace and planeswalker decks.
Could be wrong if Without planeswalker protection, opponents can remove or attack the token before its remaining loyalty becomes meaningful.
Limited 80 Eng.A-Usr.—
Casting this at an opponent's end step normally draws immediately and sets up another card next turn while demanding attacks on the token; excellent value but no board swing.
Could be wrong if Unknown set speed and planeswalker removal density determine whether opponents can punish the token before it produces its second card.
“An end-step value spell that usually draws twice over a turn cycle, but is slow and vulnerable outside planeswalker-focused shells.”
